In the current modern era, technology has transformed our lifestyle from all aspects. Be it in terms of work, transportation, and especially expenses. Almost everything is now touchless & cashless using technology.
By now, you must be used to seeing merchants displaying QR codes at counters for cashless payments. For those who don’t know yet, the QR code is like the picture below:
Cashless payment reduces physical touchpoints between merchants and customers.
You may already be familiar with this payment method, but what about our parents? Our old aunts and uncles? Let us share the steps to guide them in using QR code payment!
1. Tell the advantages of QR code payment
Cashless payments are no longer alien in our society. In fact, roadside food stalls and hawkers have also started providing cashless payment services using Malaysia National QR.
First and foremost, tell our uncles and aunts the advantages of paying using QR codes. Such as:
- No more queuing at the ATM to withdraw money
- No need to take out your wallet in public places
- Reduce the risk of money theft
2. Help them download the bank application
Make it easy for our parents or uncles and aunts to download the bank app of their choice to spend.
Then, ask them to fill in their personal information for settings. They may need help to translate the language or understand the features in the bank application.
Don’t forget! Remind them not to share their personal information such as password, OTP number, and balance with anyone.
If they need to write down passwords, make sure they are kept in a safe place.
3. Press the QR or DuitNow QR button

This step is easier if done when making a payment at the counter where they can scan the QR code.
Or you can use the QR code in your bank app for them to try and temporarily transfer money. But don’t take the opportunity to steal their money!
Show them the QR or DuitNow QR button on their bank app. This feature has been included in every major bank applications in Malaysia such as MAE Maybank, CIMB Clicks, and Bank Islam.
4. Start scanning the QR code
After pressing the button, the camera will automatically open. Help them to point their phone camera at the QR code on the counter.
After the QR code is successfully scanned, the bank application will switch to the payment amount. After keying in the amount, they have to choose their preferred account.
Make sure the account and amount entered are accurate to avoid payment issues. Then, press Pay Now.
You may refer to this tutorial video by Maybank to guide your elders more clearly.
In addition, they can also use the ‘show QR code’ function. Their QR code will be displayed on their phone screen and the cashier will scan their QR code. The amount will automatically be deducted because the store’s system has set the amount in advance.
5. And… you’re done!
Well, you’re done teaching your uncle and aunty to use QR payment for now. But they might take some time to get used to QR payment as they start using it in real settings, so you might need to give them further guidance. Be patient and don’t give up!
Good luck!
